So this month, I got a little curious about personal lubricant. What do I use it for? What kind should I buy? If you are curious as well, read on.

Finding the right lube can be an overwhelming task. A quick search on the Hustler Hollywood website brought up nearly 400 hits. Surveying the categories, I became perplexed. Should I go with "creams," "lotions and potions," or just simply "lubes"? Even with specific brand loyalty, the selection isn't narrow enough. The popular Kama Sutra brand carries everything from zesty bathing gels and love liquids to pleasure potions and body soufflé.

Safety-wise, water-based lubricants are the most recommended, especially with condoms. Silicone-based lubes are also said to be safe with condom use, and since they are not water-soluble, the lube remains slick longer and is popular for underwater sex. However, silicone-based lubes are not only more expensive than water-based ones, but they also are harder to clean off sheets and are not particularly tasty. Also, keep in mind that one should never use silicone-based lube with silicone sex toys, as its chemical properties can destroy the toy.

Glycerin-based lubes are preferred by many, and flavored lubricants usually contain glycerin for their sweetness. However, glycerin can increase the likelihood of irritation and infection, so those prone to yeast infections should go with glycerin-free water-based lubes. In general, any lube which distorts the natural pH levels of body fluids can make yeast infections more likely. So keep in mind that while flavored lubes and condoms can make fellatio more enjoyable, they should be avoided during sexual intercourse.

Another type of lubricant to avoid for sex is any oil-based lube, or lubes made of petroleum products. These lubes will destroy condoms and also can lead to vaginal infection. When in doubt about ingredients, read labels carefully. While the brand Kama Sutra labels many of their products "oils," they are always glycerin or water-based, which makes them safe for condom use. Commercially made oil-based lubes do exist for male masturbation, but again, they ruin condoms. Thus, oil in any form, whether lube, lotion, Vaseline, massage oil, or olive and almond oil, should generally be avoided.
