The role of the chancellor
Claire Costantino
Issue date: 1/29/08 Section: Guide to Vanderbilt
But Vanderbilt has to aspire to be more than just a great university today; we need to always be thinking and reaching for new ideas while at the same time preserving our essential values. So what are some of our other priorities?
Successfully launching The Commons in the fall. This will be, without question, the most dynamic, exciting living and learning environment in the country. Our faculty and students are working together day and night to put in place the programming and to help create the culture that will define the first year experience at Vanderbilt for a long time to come. We have looked forward to this moment for years and now it is here!
Beginning the next phase of the College Halls and the transformation at Kissam. It has been said for a long time, but now you will see it happen. Kissam quad will be transformed into the first two College Halls for upper-class students. What you will soon see is the design for a beautiful residential college that incorporates that same elegance and utility of The Commons and makes a great statement about our commitment to undergraduate education. If you like The Commons, you'll LOVE the next exciting phase.
Keeping Vanderbilt affordable. A Vanderbilt education is not cheap, but under our policy of need-blind admissions and meeting the full financial need of all students, we strive to bring it within reach of everyone. While we have increased our budget for need-based aid by 50 percent over the past five years, we want to do more, and we hope in the near future to announce some important changes to our financial policies that will keep Vanderbilt in the leadership position for low-income and middle-class students that it has achieved in recent years. Our students must be able to realize their dreams and not be burdened with debt on graduation.
BOARD OF TRUST BYLAWS REGARDING HTE CHANCELLOR:
"The Board shall elect the Chancellor of the University, who shall serve at the pleasure of the Board.
