The American Prospect's group blog (www.prospect.org/weblog) provides multiple perspectives from mostly young progressives who update the blog daily with dozens of posts on latest in everything from the mismanagement of the Iraq War to the lameness of the Republicans' 2008 candidate pool to non-electoral issues like public health and education. The bloggers comment mostly on the day's headlines, and they often find news clips I might have otherwise missed. Plus, they provide a good dose of snark and their short-and-quick style of writing makes the task of wading through the day's political news just a little less daunting.
Harper's
Harper's Magazine is fabulous for in-depth and insightful pieces on social and political issues. They also have great recurring features. The "Readings" section collects amusing and eye-opening excerpts of various media from around the world, and their monthly "Index" of pointed statistics and figures is always interesting. Our favorite feature is the "Findings" on the last page, a list of extraordinary research findings juxtaposed in an often hilarious way.
Democracy Now!
Democracy Now!, an online independent news source and daily broadcast out of New York City, provides a detailed account of domestic and international news without a profit-seeking corporate outlook. Browse Democracy Now.org and discover interviews with leading political figures from grassroots leaders and activists to Whitehouse spokespeople, read articles from acclaimed journalists, and view debates on the War and Peace Report. Funded entirely by concerned Americans like you, Democracy Now! uncovers our world's dirt and keeps digging.
CounterPunch
Not for the faint of heart. Edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair, CounterPunch is an online political newsletter noted for its fierce muckraking and relentlessly critical coverage of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Also a great place to find scrutinizing coverage of U.S. Foreign Policy and unconventional wisdom on domestic issues.
