On Nov. 2, the Vanderbilt Progressive Student Union organized a “March to the Polls” to generate enthusiasm and noise in support of Sen. Kerry with over 100 students and community members attending. Gathering on Alumni Lawn, the group paraded through campus and down 21st Ave. to Eakin Elementary, where constituents in Vanderbilt’s district vote. The display of political fervor was a rare sight on Vanderbilt’s campus, prompting numerous looks of astonishment at the band of screaming and sign-bearing Kerry supporters, complete with accordion, horn and drum players. Many onlookers also showed support by waves and honks. The turnout for the counter rally of pro-Bush students was comparatively dismal, as shown at left.
