During the first of three presidential debates, George Bush and John Kerry deliberated formally for ninety minutes about foreign policy issues. Although the scope of the debate remained open to international policy issues, the discourse remained focused on the war in Iraq.

Most critics agreed that Kerry proved more prepared, eloquent and confident; ultimately, his statements and refutations offered clarity to uncertain voters. Throughout the debate Kerry cleverly responded to Bush's continuously empty rhetoric with many powerfully concise remarks. His most resonating of the night countered Republican assertions of changing his positions on Iraq: "I've had one position, one consistent position, that Saddam Hussein was a threat. There was a right way to disarm him and a wrong way.And the president chose the wrong way."
