Latest Poll has Bush Up by 16 Points...

A poll conducted by The Tennessean late last week demonstrated that voters

state-wide currently prefer Bush over Kerry, 53% to 37%.  Poll respondents

believed that Bush could handle Iraq better, and was also strong on the issues

of terrorism and homeland security.  Kerry still leads Bush over the economy

and education, however- two issues that Newsweek has labeled “key” in this

year’s election.

Congress Not Likely to Approve Imported Drugs...

Despite long-standing pleas from patients and physicians, it still seems

unlikely that congress will make it possible for citizens to buy their drugs

from cheaper Canadian pharmacies.  The Drug Importation Act has been under

debate for many years, but with congress adjourning in less than a month time

is running out for any substantial changes to be mad in 2004.  Sen. Majority

Leader Bill Frist gave a brief statement in the issue last Tuesday, saying “I

don’t think we can address it adequately in the next 17 days.”

Metro Term Limit Lawsuit...

On Sept. 16th legal activist John Jay Hooker filed a lawsuit against the

Davidson County Election Commission challenging the constitutionality of term

limits — specifically mayoral term limits.  He believes that the Metro Charter

contradicts itself, saying that the mayor can only serve two terms in some

paragraphs and three terms in others.  The case is under investigation by local

attorneys who feel that Hooker has a legitimate concern.  Ultimately, he

feels “Term limits attempt to change the qualification of a candidate with a

disqualification saying that if you served twice you can’t run.”

Purcell Pushes for Community Court...

Following through on his promise to remedy chronic homelessness in Nashville,

Mayor Bill Purcell is fighting to try and establish a community court to

address homeless offenders and connect them to services that they need.  He is

working in conjunction with several homeless advocacy groups and social service

workers, hoping to have at least a makeshift system up and running by June of

2005
