The Vanderbilt College Democrats are ready for a change in the national leadership. They are tirelessly planning and working toward ensuring this change, in the form of John Kerry being elected to the White House on November 2nd.

The Vanderbilt College Democrats clearly symbolize a movement with a mission. David Darwin, President of Vanderbilt College Democrats, says “Even in the first week back on campus, I’ve seen literally hundreds of students express their enthusiasm for the Democratic Party and the Kerry/Edwards ticket. We’re ready to get to work. We’re not just about political discussion. We’re about political action.”

The aforementioned political action will include both recruiting new members for the College Democrats chapter on Vanderbilt’s campus as well as firing up current members, together taking the message of the Democratic Party to fellow students, the Nashville community and the state of Tennessee.

David Darwin affirms that this mission will be accomplished on five fronts.

First, the College Democrats will endeavor to get the message out that this is not a Republican-dominated school. Vanderbilt College Democrats are in abundance this year and are ready to get to work.

Second, the campus chapter of College Democrats of America will be working with the Kerry-Edwards campaign and the Davidson County Democratic Party to carry out targeted canvassing, to register new voters, and to ensure that the Nashville community gets to the polls on November 2.

The College Democrats’ third goal is to inspire otherwise apathetic students to take part in the upcoming election by demonstrating to them the immense power their votes yield.

As the fourth part of its mission Vandy Democrats will work to bring new leadership to the White House by partnering with nearby institutions such as Belmont University and David Lipscomb College to recruit more volunteers and create a greater sense of unity among all members of the party.

This will likely include co-sponsoring one or two events with those chapters of College Democrats as well as other Democratic groups throughout Nashville.

Finally, the Vanderbilt chapter of College Democrats will work diligently to convince undecided voters on campus that change is imperative to the achievement of progress and that Senators Kerry and Edwards hold the keys to “A Stronger America.”

General meetings for the Vanderbilt College Democrats are held every other Monday evening at 8pm in the Branscomb Recreational Room.

Between these regularly scheduled meetings, College Democrats will be volunteering with the Davidson County Democratic Party and organizing social events for liberal students to get to know one another.

The next meeting of the Vanderbilt College Democrats will be Monday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Branscomb Recreational Room.
