Legalizing marijuana: should it happen?

The Pot only wants to help

As I sit in my room taking hits from a bong loaded with the finest cannabis Vanderbilt has to offer, I think of all the good that has come from my use of The Pot over the years.

Back in fifth grade in D.A.R.E., I was told The Pot would only aid in the deterioration of me as a person and would be a direct route to other, more serious drugs. Looking back, D.A.R.E. taught me two important lessons -- first, what The Pot was and how to get it, and second, how to operate a bowl. As high school neared, The Pot became commonplace with my friends, so I gave into peer pressure and tried The Pot a couple of times. I discovered that The Pot provided me with a euphoric feeling. My mind was open; everything took on new, deeper meaning, as the synapses in my brain made new and original connections.

The Pot also provides a way for me to relax and clear my mind of all the stress in my life, preventing at least three potential nervous breakdowns. It makes me smile. So I can honestly say that The Pot has saved my life.

I have also found that The Pot is considered a universal peace offering among almost all smokers of The Pot. You know that if someone offers you The Pot they are one to be trusted, and you can consider them a friend. Now for those of you who can't justify the legalization of The Pot just by hearing how great it is from me, I did a little research. For those of you who are ignorant to the basics of The Pot, marijuana consists of the dried flowers and leaves of some strains of the female cannabis plant, which contains the non-narcotic chemical THC (that's what gets you high). The Pot gives a variety of sensual effects, from sedative to stimulant.

Who smokes The Pot? Well, lots of people do. One in every five Americans has tried it and three in every five Europeans. No! Marijuana is not addictive. Sociologists report that sugar and chocolate are more habit-forming than The Pot. Concerning safety, no one has ever died from the smoking of marijuana cigarettes. Judge Francis Young said in 1988 that "marijuana is safer than many foods we commonly consume."

Marijuana is not a gateway drug! The National Academy of Science reports, "Legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol ...precede the use of all illicit drugs."According to Richard Nixon's blue Ribbon Report, it was found that marijuana smokers "tend to be unrepresented in violence and in crime especially compared to the users of alcohol." Finally I would just like to let you know that marijuana does very little in the way of harming one's health. In 1987 a Harvard University medical team found that "dangerous physical reactions to marijuana are almost unknown."

End the prohibition of marijuana. Stop the hypocrisy! That is what needs to be done. I could give you thousands of more reasons why The Pot is for you, but it's time to smoke another joint.

I too did some research on this, and it confused me. No deaths, no confrontations, no harm, and over 30 significant medical uses...and it's illegal? Please, someone tell me why this is so, and I really hope people aren't dying to fight this because of taxes. (Continued…)
